Robert "Smoke" Houston, 88, of Hixson, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, September 30, 2011.
Smoke was born and grew up in Loudon, Tennessee. He served our country during World War II, in the U. S. Army and was a former POW for 7 months. Smoke retired from Vulcan Materials after 44 years of service and was of the Baptist faith. Smoke was an avid University of Tennessee Vols football fan holding the same season tickets for 33 years.

Robert "Smoke" Houston, 88, of Hixson, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, September 30, 2011.
Smoke was born and grew up in Loudon, Tennessee. He served our country during World War II, in the U. S. Army and was a former POW for 7 months. Smoke retired from Vulcan Materials after 44 years of service and was of the Baptist faith. Smoke was an avid University of Tennessee Vols football fan holding the same season tickets for 33 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Maggie Houston and a sister, Mattie Mae Lane all of Loudon; sons-in-law, Michael S. Wheeler, Sr. and Kenneth "Weasel" E. Davis.
Smoke is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Mary Ruth Milsaps Houston; two daughters, Anne H. Wheeler and Jeannie H. Davis; seven grandchildren, Mike (Amy) Wheeler, Jr., Lori ("Bob") Bailey, Amy (William) Travis, Becca Pool, Robert "Al" Davis, C. J. (Candice) Davis; Matthew Davis; nine great grandchildren, Stephen, Mary Ruth and Julia Wheeler, Erin Bailey, Harrison and Grace Travis, Megan Pool, Holden and Nolan Davis; sister, Lillie Belle Dutton; brother-in-law, James Milsaps; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday and 12 to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the North Chapel.
Services for Smoke will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the North Chapel with Dr. Fred Steelman officiating. Burial will follow in National Cemetery with Military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Smoke's name to the Community Kitchen, 727 East 11th St., Chattanooga, TN 37403, or the Red Cross, 801 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37403 or to the Salvation Army 800 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37403.
